Our next Think! Book Club will discuss Kate Raworth’s 2017 book “Doughnut Economics.” Raworth’s paradigm-breaking diagram proposed that economics should be about getting humankind into the sweet, donut-shaped space defined, on the inside, by the necessity of providing for everyone’s basic needs and, on the outside, by the ecological limits of our planet. In this book, she develops this proposal by identifying “seven ways to think like a twenty-first-century economist:” Change the goal; See the big picture; Nurture human nature; Get savvy with systems; Design to distribute; Create to regenerate; and Be agnostic about growth.
“Donut Economics” has 249 pages of text and is available at Amazon for $15. If you cannot acquire or read the book, you can familiarize yourself with its contents by watching various YouTube, TedTalk, and other videos featuring its author. Our discussion will consider Raworth’s arguments against mainstream, growth-oriented economics, as well as the advisability and likely effectiveness of the changes in thought and practice she proposes. Whether or not you have read the book, feel free to join us if these matters are of interest and concern to you.
