Come join fellow humanists and friends for a hike and camaraderie on three autumn Wednesdays — September 30, October 7 and 14 at William O’Brien State Park. (Daily or yearly park pass required.*)
Make new friends and connect with nature! Check out these park photos for a preview of what’s in store. The flowers, grasses, and trees each peak at slightly different times. If you’re able to attend all 3 weeks, you’ll see something new each day.
We will hike 6 miles with some inclines. We’ll aim for a moderate pace in flat areas and a casual pace on the inclines. That allows for a 30 minute snack/lunch break, located at an amazing panoramic overlook. The overlook includes a picnic table.
- Dress with sturdy footwear and sunscreen/glasses/hat. Wear long pants and tuck them into your socks to avoid ticks.
- Consider hiking poles. Add a comment if you need to borrow poles. (Gail has 3 pairs available to borrow.)
- Bring a water bottle and a snack or light packable lunch to enjoy during a break.
Consider downloading the park’s Summer GeoPDF map to your phone
before the event, as well as the following two steps. As we hike, a dot will
move along the map in real time. It’s a great way to navigate DNR trails!
- Download the Avenza app to your phone.
- Upload the Summer GeoPDF map to Avenza.
If you’d like to bring your dog, please add a note to the event and then arrive 20 minutes early to allow a brief greeting. Gail’s 4 and 5 year old Goldens will join us, and that gives them an introduction before our group begins to mingle. Also bring bags for clean up, and a water bowl for afterwards.
In the event of inclement weather, the Meetup event will announce a cancellation for that day. Please check for Meetup event’s comments at 9:00 AM the day of the hike, just in case there are special announcements.
Parking: From the main park entrance go just past the ranger station and take the first left hand turn. Then take the immediate right hand turn into the Visitor Center parking lot.
Bathrooms and Water: Both are located inside the Visitor Center. It is accessible before and after the hike. The water fountain has a bottle filler.
