Our next book, “The Righteous Mind” by social psychologist Jonathan Haidt, uses his innovative theory of moral psychology to explain why we are so divided by politics and religion. Haidt argues that moral judgments are driven by emotions, not reason, and that differences in peoples’ deep intuitions about right and wrong place them in divergent places on the political spectrum. We will want to consider the relative importance of reason and emotions in our ethical and other judgments. We’ll also be talking about plausible explanations of why Americans are so divided by politics and religion.
Published in 2012, “The Righteous Mind” is available from Amazon for $16. Covering a wide range of social psychological research, the book also addresses traditional views of ethics. Well written and accessible, it has 371 pages of text. You are welcome to join us even if you haven’t read the book, but would like to participate or just listen in on a discussion of these matters.
