This session will focus on the 2017 book by Kurt Anderson, Fantasyland, a broad history of America’s penchant for fantastical beliefs. Jon Peterson will provide an overview of the book and its ideas for discussion.
To prepare for this session, read the book or watch the author discuss his ideas in these You Tube videos.
From the book’s promo:
“In this sweeping, eloquent history of America, Kurt Andersen shows that what’s happening in our country today–this post-factual, “fake news” moment we’re all living through–is not something new, but rather the ultimate expression of our national character. America was founded by wishful dreamers, magical thinkers, and true believers, by hucksters and their suckers. Fantasy is deeply embedded in our DNA.”
The presentation and discussion will be from 3:00—4:30. Afterwards, join other Secular Saturday attendees in the gallery for refreshments and socializing.
Jon is a HumanistsMN member who has a keen interest in moral philosophy and ethics. He currently works in technical communication in the medical field.
