Who We Are

Are You An Atheist? Then America Needs You to Say So

3 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 21

This month HumanistsMN welcomes Kate Cohen to our Community Gathering. She is a Washington Post contributing columnist and author of the forthcoming book We of Little Faith: Why I Stopped Pretending to Believe (and Maybe You Should Too).

Even though a growing number of Americans don’t believe in a god, many remain reluctant to say so out loud. Kate will discuss why it is both rewarding for nonbelievers to announce themselves and crucial to our country’s future as we fight the growing power of the Christian right.

In We of Little Faith, she describes the joys and challenges of her own decision to fully embrace atheism and investigates religion’s appeal to explain the ways we can thrive without it. She urges other nonbelievers to speak up to help change the American cultural conversation.

Our members advocate for policies that reflect humanist values, including those that promote justice and a healthy planet. We protest (as necessary), communicate with political leaders and the public, and directly help people in need.

Community is the core of our work and events. Whether we’re learning together, helping each other, or socializing, HMN members and friends know how to have fun while making a positive contribution to the one world we all live in.
