As we start a new program year at HumanistsMN, you can expect increased programming and some great speakers! Also a few tweaks: starting this month, our first and third Saturday afternoon programs at First Unitarian Society will both be billed as “Humanist Community Gatherings.”
We are listening to our members and what we have heard is that you want more engagement with each other at our programming. More opportunities to “talk amongst yourselves” (as Mike Myers used to say in his “Coffee Talk” skit on “Saturday Night Live” in the early 90s. For those of you too young to remember, check it out!).
So, every first and third Saturday of the month, we will offer a variety of sessions at these “Community Gatherings” with opportunities for conversation and interaction — followed by a shared social time with all attendees. We will offer a mix of local speakers, occasionally national speakers, and plenty of member-led presentations and discussions. We hope you will join us and take this opportunity to make deeper connections with fellow members and guests.
Some upcoming highlights so far: Patrick Elliott from the Freedom From Religion Foundation, Sept. 6; Julio Zelaya from ACLU of Minnesota, Sept. 20; Anne Jones from Health Care for All, Oct. 4; Matthew Taylor from the Institute for Islamic, Christian, & Jewish Studies speaking on Christian nationalism and the New Apostolic Reformation, Nov. 8; Leo Igwe, Nigerian humanist speaking on religious persecution in Africa, Dec. 6. Keep an eye on Meetup for further details about these programs.
We have retired the label “Secular Saturday,” but will maintain the spirit of those member-led sessions plus social hour. In addition to our bimonthly Community Gatherings, you will see more joint programming between HumanistsMN and First Unitarian Society that addresses needs for support, personal enrichment, and self-care.
Our many happy hours and social events will continue out in the community, along with book clubs, discussion groups, and service projects that offer our members and friends opportunities to connect with one another in a myriad of ways.
